WWOS 2022: Joe Laird

Joe Laird woodturning is a small craft business based in Co. Meath Ireland. A 7th generation turner, woodturning and carving have been a part of Joe’s trade since he began work as a cabinetmaker when he was a boy.

Joe has crafted quite a number of award winning pieces over the years. His first being: 1st place in the beginners section of the IWG national seminar 1993. It was at this point that Joe realised that he had quite a talent for woodturning. From that point on, Joe’s work won award after award as he entered pieces into the intermediate and advanced sections.

In 2005 Joe became a semi-professional woodturner, making commission pieces and teaching adult classes in Hartstown Community School and teens in Kings hospital school.

In 2007 Joe took the final leap and became a full-time, professional woodturner. Joe won the Professional section of the IWG national seminar 2009 and today Joe works out of his purpose built studios in Co Meath, Ireland.

Currently Joe offers high quality functional and decorative pieces and Commissions. Joe teaches woodturning and all levels to the young and old alike. Through this teaching Joe hopes to raise interest in the craft of woodturning in Ireland.

Joe was Chairperson of the IWG (since 2013 – 2016) as well as Chairperson and founding member of his local chapter of the IWG Craobh Cuig Deag.

Joe Laird
I will be making one of my signature pieces, the Shamrock Bowl. This piece involves turning on multiple centres and requires accuracy in marking out and good tool control to achieve this design with a crisp finish.
